Polytene Chromosome: It was first observed by E.G. Balbiani in 1881 in salivary gland cells of Dipteran larvae. They reveal a distinct pattern of transverse banding (dark and light). The polytene chromosomes are visible during interphase and prophase of mitosis. Polytene chromosomes have Balbiani rings or chromosome puffs.
